The Death Ray

Agent K scurried down the alley, chest heaving and gasping for breath. She could hear the alien pounding the pavement behind her. If she could just make it to the next corner, down a busy street, across the park, and into the yarn shop, she would be okay.

“Come back here!” yelled the alien. “You won’t get away this time!” It sounded like the foul creature was gaining on her.

She turned the corner of the alley and skidded on a banana peel that some idiot had left in the middle of the alley. She rolled head over heels for what felt like an hour, but was probably only a few seconds. That slip had likely saved her bacon for the moment, as a bright green laser beam struck the trash cans where Agent K had been a moment ago, causing them to dissolve into atoms.

“How do you like my new toy?” taunted the alien. “I had it made specially for you!”

Agent K scrambled to her feet, dodging another blast from the laser. She burst out of the alley into bright sunshine, amid the cacophony of the busy street. She raced past gaping tourists and smart-phone-toting business people and into the park across the street.

She made the mistake then of looking over her shoulder. A blast of green light was the last thing Agent K saw, and the hopes of a wool-loving humanity died with her.

Happy April Fool’s Day! And don’t worry, Agent K is not really dead and will return in another adventure soon!
